Bestseller of local literature books (Vinabook 14-12-2010)
Bestseller of local literature books at www. vinabook.com from 6 to 12/Dec/2010
This week can be considered the Week of Nguyen Nhat Anh’s Stories when three of his books “Toi Thay Hoa Vang Tren Co Xanh (I see yellow flowers on green grass)”, “Cho Toi Mot Ve Di Tuoi Tho (Give me a ticket to childhood)” and “Dao Mong Mo (Dreamy Island”) are in the leading positions of the week.
That “Toi Thay Hoa Vang Tren Co Xanh” topped the list of sold books during its first week of publication indicates how interesting the name Nguyen Nhat Anh is to not only teenagers but also to most readers.
“Toi Thay Hoa Vang Tren Co Xanh” is Nguyen Nhat Anh’s longest book that has just won him the ASEAN Literature Award. The book is about hard-up childhood in a countryside village. In addition to the usual subject of love, it is the first time Nguyen Nhat Anh has included anti-heroes and raised moral issues like negligence and evils. 81 short chapters are 81 short stories about things around kids in a small village such as the story about a toad as God’s uncle, ghost stories, prince and princess, hunger, house on fire, floods, etc.
"Toi Thay Hoa Vang Tren Co Xanh " promises to bring interesting things to young and old readers alike in a simple story-telling way by kids along with amazing and heart-breaking situations in a book of more than 300 pages.
“Cho Toi Mot Ve Di Tuoi Tho” is like a train back to a memory of unaffected playful childhood. The story’s main characters like Hai Co, Ti Sun, Cu Tun, Cu Mui had a rich and varied childhood, causing any readers to see their childhood is part of the story. The story begins with a comment by the main character Mui, an eight-year-old boy "Life is so boring and tasteless". With different pieces of evidence, he proves that “life is too old”. And little Mui gets playful again like a child when he and his friends begin to seek ways to get rid of boredom and tastelessness by making use of their own property – which is their imagination. For example, they think of such games as treasure seeking, playing roles of “spouses, parents, kids”. They change the order and positions set in society like eating with a basin instead of a bowl, calling a dog an iron, calling a close friend a headmaster. The adults’ vast world is turned by the kids into a small world, turning things upside down and changing the routines.
“Dao Mong Mo” is a slice of the life of 10-year-old kids with a rich imagination like any other kid. They dream, imagine and “make real” all their desires.
The story begins from a heap of sand, and it is told by the character Cu (little) Tin. There is a desolate island on which there is Emperor of the island, his wife and a young man called Saturday. Every day the couple and Saturday have to go to school, but after school time it is a different world of the island, of the sea with sharks and of a forest with fierce wild animals. It is exciting and attractive with arguments, ruling, love, fights and even kisses!
Childhood in Nguyen Nhat Anh’s “Dao Mong Mo” is like that in his other stories. It is clear and sweet. Sometimes people love to be little again like Cu Tin to be able to laugh, cry, be Emperor of an island interested in reading books and knowing how to fight against scoundrels and imprison thieves. It shows that a kid’s need for respect is sometimes much greater than the need for love.
Full of kids’ clearness, humor, reality of emotions, actions and language, “Dao Mong Mo” can satisfy their needs for playing, using their imagination to their heart’s content without being called “a bit insane” or “boasting” kids. The story also expresses the parents’ desire to keep their kids unaffected by adult’s bad and dishonest behaviors.
